At the beginning of the year, Te Haeata committee members met with the new Minister for Treaty Negotiations, Chris Finlayson, and new Minister of Maori Affairs, Dr Peter Sharples, in Gisborne. The meeting was a great opportunity to discuss treaty claims settlement negotiations. The Ministers expressed a commitment to the High Level Agreement signed at the end of 2008 between the outgoing Labour Government and Te Haeata (for a copy of this Agreement go to www.tehaeata.co.nz). Minister Finlayson also expressed a commitment to reaching a settlement of all Ngati Porou historical Treaty claims, as agreed with the last Government.
